Travel down Stuart Highway to reach our initial destination in Adelaide River. Our first stop will be at the second-largest war cemetery in Australia, a serene location to pay tribute to the fallen. We will break here at an adjoining park for your Morning Tea break.
Our journey will then lead us to Katherine Gorge, situated within the breathtaking Nitmiluk National Park.
The name Nitmiluk translates to "Cicada Place" in the native language of the Jawoyn people, who are the traditional owners of the Park. This sanctuary is home to a diverse range of rare and endangered plant and animal species, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and adventurers alike
Arriving in the small, historical township of Kathrine, we will break for a delisious lunch, in a nice cafe setting, under big shady trees. From Katherine we drive towards the beginning of the 13-Gorge system.
Prepare to be captivated by the picturesque waterfalls and rugged terrain. Embark on a mesmerizing 2-hour boat cruise, complete with a short hike and a glimpse of ancient Aboriginal Rock Art within the Gorge system. Immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of the Gorges, surrounded by towering walls that reach up to 70 meters high.
Observe Freshwater Crocodiles basking in the sun, kingfishers hunting for prey, or be delighted by a wallaby quenching its thirst by the water's edge.
Our itinerary also includes a visit to Edith Falls (Leliyn), where you can choose to take a leisurely stroll or a refreshing swim in the pool, which boasts a perennial waterfall. Keep an eye out for archer fish and other fish species in the natural pool lined with paperbark and Pandanus trees.
This region is a very special place in the Top End, which should be not missed on your visit to Darwin.
